Synopsis The effects of ocean waves on the stability of underwater slopes in soft underconsolidated deltaic sediments are examined. The pressure changes on the sea floor, associated with the passage of a wave, are able to cause shear failure in soft sediments in water depths up to about 400 ft. The waves impose an oscillatory motion on the soft sediments which, on sloping ground, leads to a mass transfer of soil down slope. Also the repeated reversals of shear strain in the sediment cause remoulding of the sediment and a reduction in shear strength.
Synopsis A series of drained and undrained triaxial compression tests have been made on samples of two clays in order to study the effects of consolidation history. The manner in which the strength and pore pressure or volume changes during shear vary with the degree of overconsolidation are recorded, and the differences in strength in the drained and undrained tests are compared.
The results of a series of tests designed to examine the behavior of saturated clay soil under repeated loading are reported. Triaxial tests, under conditions of axial symmetry, were used and the rates of deformation were chosen so as to permit the accurate measurement of pore water pressure at all stages of the tests. It was found that, for any particular consolidation history, a critical level of repeated stress existed. Below this critical level, a state of nonfailure equilibrium was reached in which the stress-strain curves followed closed hysteresis loops. Above the critical level of repeated stress, effective stress failure occurred; and each cycle of loading produced cumulative increases in deformation. An interesting feature of the test results was that a linear relationship between the magnitude of the applied repeated stress and the increase in pore water pressure was found for stress levels below the critical value.
Synopsis Theory shows that a fully drained condition is impossible to attain in a laboratory “drained” test run at a constant rate of strain. However, expressions which have been derived in this paper enable an estimate to be made of the duration of the test necessary to ensure a certain closeness of approximation to the fully drained condition. The results of a number of drained triaxial and shear-box tests on three clays—eked out at various rates of strain are shown to confirm, in a general way, the predictions of the theory.
Synopsis In the undrained triaxial compression test the rubber membranes enclosing the specimens give rise to an apparent increase in strength. This article presents the results of tests to determine the magnitide of this effect together with an approximate theoretical treatment. Triaxial tests on remoulded London clay, employing rubber membranes of three different thicknesses, when compared with unconfined compression tests at the same moisture content show that the strength contributed by the rubber membrane is:— independent of specimen strength proportional to the stiffness of the membrane independent of cell pressure. In compression tests, with the specimen enclosed in a rubber membrane but with no lateral pressure, the effect is smaller than in the normal triaxial test. Filter paper drains, used to accelerate consolidation, add further to the compression strength and consequently a larger correction must be applied to the measured strength. A method for estimating the rubber correction from a simple extension test on a typical membrane is suggested.
