The production of pulp from wood is often complicated by the deposition of "pitch", a sticky material which stems from the resin present in all types of wood. "Pitch Expert", a knowledge based trouble shooter for pitch problems operates under a heavy set of constraints imposed by the combination of the expertise itself and the operating environment of pulp mills. In order to satisfy these constraints, a set of specialized structures and mechanisms were developed and refined in order to achieve a customfit. Furthermore, these same structures and constraints now serve to aid in the maintenance and continued additions of new knowledge to the system. The utilization of this approach has led to a knowledge based system which both the domain expert and the end-users feel comfortable with. The result is that the number of mills using this system is growing rapidly.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
