Canopy density over a native stand of Ilex opaca Ait. in Georgetown, Delaware was modified to provide 3 light intensity levels. Berry set was significantly greater in the cleared stand vs. the partial and full canopy plots. Leaf chlorophyll expressed on either an area or weight basis, was significantly less in the cleared stand than the other 2 treatments. Decreased light intensity significantly increased leaf area while decreasing leaf weight. Trees in the cleared stand had a significantly greater increase in trunk diameter and height, but not in width, than did lower light treatments.
