Large scale space power systems such as NASA's Space Station Freedom pose significant challenges for autonomous control on-orbit. Conventional computer control techniques inherently emphasize highly structured algorithmic control code, which can deal with a predetermined set of specific contingencies. While expert system technology offers greater flexibility for system control, it introduces additional challenges for test and verification. This paper reports on recent work to combine the positive features of both classical and expert system control techniques in a hybrid, multiprocessor approach. Basic theory is presented, along with actual lab results from a prototype environment.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
