RESUMO -O processo de industrialização da mandioca gera um efluente vulgarmente chamado de manipueira, que apresenta alta carga orgânica e cianeto livre (HCN). No estado de Sergipe, grande parte da produção de farinha é realizada de forma artesanal em casas de farinha, onde o efluente originado na prensagem da mandioca é descartado in natura no solo ou em pequenos córregos, inserindo no meio ambiente uma carga orgânica elevada podendo resultar impactos ambientais no entorno dessas unidades de produção. A fim de atender as necessidades desses pequenos produtores avaliou-se a eficiência de processos combinados, coagulação/floculação/sedimentação com agentes coagulantes naturais para a redução de turbidez e DQO da manipueira decantada. Dentre os três coagulantes testados para a redução da turbidez e DQO da manipueira decantada destaca-se a quitosana com redução de turbidez de 96,37% e da DQO de 74,89%, um coagulante natural que não agride o meio ambiente e nem causa danos ao ser humano, a moringa mostrou-se instável com o passar do tempo, o que prejudica sua viabilidade como um bom agente coagulante/floculante, já o sulfato de alumínio sozinho não foi eficiente nem na redução da turbidez nem da DQO, pois não consegue adensar a carga orgânica dissolvida no efluente. Nos ensaios realizados, a curva de sedimentação com a quitosana obteve um tempo mínimo de sedimentação igual a 15 minutos. INTRODUÇÃOA mandioca é a quinta cultura básica mais importante do mundo, com uma produção de cerca de 285 milhões de toneladas/ano de raízes não processadas (DE CARVALHO et al., 2018). A maior parte da cultura é processada em grandes indústrias, entretanto existem muitos pequenos produtores em todo mundo já que o processamento da mandioca é relativamente simples (NASU;FORMENTINI;FURLANETTO, 2015).Segundo DOS SANTOS et al. (2018) os processos necessários para o processamento do amido da mandioca geram vários resíduos, sendo o principal a lavagem da mandioca ou a manipueira. Quando esta água residual é liberada para o meio ambiente, ela pode causar sérios problemas de poluição, pois, além de sua alta carga orgânica, contém cianeto, um composto tóxico para a maioria dos seres aeróbicos.A coagulação consiste na desestabilização de partículas em suspensão presentes na água (que possuem sua superfície carregada com cargas elétricas negativas), os quais em contato com a água formam espécies hidrolisadas que, por sua vez, adsorvem nas partículas coloidais presentes na água e as desestabilizam (BARTIKO; DE JULIO, 2015).
