A superconducting magnet facility has recently been built and operated as an adjunct to a plasma. physics experiment. The facility consists of two superconducting coils in a variable-spacing, horizontal-axis, split-pair configuration. Both coils are enclosed in Dewars that allow a working magnetic field diameter of 17.8 cm at the necks of the magnetic bottle. Each coil is capable of producing a maximum field of 25 kG on its axis. The operating characteristics of the coils, the Dewars, and the facility described are superior to conventional magnets of the same field strength and geometry on grounds of economy, convenience, and flexibility.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
