The city subject of this research does not have any reverse logistics scheme for biodegradable waste. It goes to the landfill because recycling is considered impracticable for technical and economic reasons. The objective of this study was to refute the objections raised against biodegradable municipal waste recycling. Of the 600 tonnes of waste collected daily, 308 tonnes are biodegradable material originating from residences, merchants and shopping centers. To refute the economic objections, the study presents calculations based on compost prices and tipping fees that show a possible revenue of BRL 0.39 per kg of biodegradable waste collected and composted. This compares favorably with cardboard, paper, steel and plastics, which are recycled by market forces alone. The study identifies composting enterprises interested in receiving biodegradable municipal waste. To refute the technical objections, the research produced precedents of biodegradable discards recycling in apartment buildings and restaurants replicable at larger scales. SUMMARYThis research had the objective of developing a campaign to sensitize and encourage the reduction of food waste and the production of biodegradable waste by the users of the University Restaurant of the Campus Santa Monica of the Federal University of Uberlandia (UFU) / MG. Meetings were held with the responsible nutritionists to obtain information such as: date of inauguration of the site; if any project had already been carried out in this sense to combat waste and waste production; a destination given to leftovers and leftovers; amount of wasted food at lunch and dinner every day that become waste without reuse; number of meals served. The campaign was carried out for 10 days, with the distribution of posters and panels throughout the area of the U.R., with phrases and photos flashy to sensitize the users of the place. In the panels was exposed the amount wasted on each campaign day, how many people could be fed with that amount and how much each person left on average in the trays. This information was updated every day before lunch time. A total of 2657.58 kg of wasted food and an average of 101 g of leftovers left in the trays of the restaurant users were counted, showing the importance of campaigns against waste and waste production in these places. Finally, the slogan is to eliminate waste, controlling consumption,...
