Los centros comerciales se han convertido en importantes focos de atracción en las periferias de las principales aglomeraciones urbanas. Los consumidores se desplazan hasta ellos fundamentalmente en vehículo privado, lo que compromete los objetivos de las políticas de movilidad sostenible que fijan la mayor parte de las metrópolis. Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar la movilidad provocada por los centros comerciales del área metropolitana de Madrid, a partir de la realización de encuestas realizadas in situ en once grandes superficies. Se parte de la hipótesis de que la localización de los centros comerciales condiciona en gran medida las pautas de comportamiento de los consumidores que atraen. Por lo tanto desde el punto de vista de las políticas públicas, las soluciones deberían abordarse más desde la perspectiva de la ordenación urbana que desde la mejora de las infraestructuras y de los servicios de transporte.
