Le district des Collines Métallifères (près de Massa Marittima, sud Toscane) renferme de nombreux gisements de Cu-Pb-Zn (Ag) qui ont alimenté sur le temps long l’industrie minière et métallurgique. À partir des données archéologiques et historiques, au Moyen Âge (XIe-XIVe siècles), la production du métal de ce district était principalement destinée au monnayage.
Dans cette communication, nous proposons une mise à jour de l’état de nos connaissances (ce que nous savons et surtout, ce qui nous reste à connaître) sur les techniques de production du métal (cuivre, argent et plomb), à partir des fouilles archéométallurgiques conduites dans la ville de Montieri, la proche canonica Saint Nicolas, le site minier de Cugnano et les très récentes découvertes à La Vetricella. En outre, nous présenterons les premiers résultats analytiques (éléments traces et composition isotopique) obtenus sur des monnaies en cuivre et cuivre-argent en circulation dans la région des Collines Métallifères. Ces résultats permettent d’esquisser les premières conclusions sur la provenance du métal utilisé dans le monnayage dans ce territoire au Moyen Âge.
