To evaluate the potential benefits and risks associated with tea consumption it is important to identify the constituents of this beverage. Levels of some minerals, caffeine and catechins in green tea samples commercialized in Portugal were evaluated. Potassium is the metal present in larger amount (92-151 mg/l). The content of sodium, calcium, fluoride, aluminium, manganese and iron were 35-69, 1.9-3.5, 0.80-2.0, 1.0-2.2, 0.52-1.9, 0.020-0.128 mg/l, respectively. Chromium and selenium were not detected. The resulting data showed considerable variability in catechins content. The levels of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) ranged from 117 to 442 mg/l, epicatechin 3-gallate (EGC) from 203 to 471 mg/l, epigallocatechin (ECG) from 16.9 to 150 mg/l, epicatechin (EC) from 25 to 81 mg/l and catechin (C) from 9.03 to 115 mg/l. Caffeine contents in the green tea infusions studied were between 141-338 mg/l. Green tea infusions provide significant amounts of catechins and could be an important source of some minerals.
Zika virus (ZIKV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) cocirculate throughout much of the tropical Western Hemisphere; however, few cases of coinfection with these two pathogens have been reported. Herein, we describe three cases of ZIKV-CHIKV coinfection detected at a single center in Ecuador: a patient who developed symptoms on postoperative day 5 from an orthopedic procedure, a woman who had traveled to Ecuador for fertility treatment, and a woman who was admitted for Guillain-Barré syndrome and had ZIKV and CHIKV detected in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. All cases were diagnosed using a multiplex real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and ZIKV viremia was detected as late as 16 days after symptom onset. These cases demonstrate the varied clinical presentation of ZIKV-CHIKV coinfections as well as the importance of multiplexed arboviral testing for these pathogens.
Infants have a more restricted diet and they generally consume more food on a body weight basis than adults. Therefore, the significance and potential health risk of any contaminant in foods consumed by infants is increased and diligent attention must be paid to this particular area. The present study aims to determine the occurrence of aflatoxin M 1 (AFM 1 ), aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in processed cereal-based foods (flours) and infant formulae (milk powder) available in the Portuguese market, both sold as conventional and organic origin. Mycotoxin determination was carried out using a method previously applied to duplicate diet samples. This method employed chloroform extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, immunoaffinity column (IAC) cleanup and HPLC analysis with fluorescence detection after postcolumn derivatisation. Quantification limits were 0.014, 0.004 and 0.028 μg kg −1 for AFM 1 , AFB 1 and OTA, respectively. These toxins could only be quantified in 12 of 27 analysed samples (15 positive results): two samples with AFM 1 , two samples with AFM 1 and OTA, one sample with AFB 1 and OTA and seven samples with OTA. Positive results concerned four for AFM 1 (26%), one for AFB 1 (7%) and ten for OTA (67%). For these samples, contents ranged between 0.017-0.041 μg AFM 1 kg −1 , 0.034-0.212 μg OTA kg −1 , and one sample had a value of 0.009 μg AFB 1 kg −1 . Considering the presented results, we could provisionally conclude that the presence of these mycotoxins in baby foods does not constitute a public health problem. These are the first results concerning the occurrence of mycotoxins in marketed baby foods in Portugal and this is the first study using the HPLC method, proposed for duplicate diets, in baby food sample analysis.
ANALYSIS OF PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOUNDS IN WATER BY SPE-UPLC-ESI-MS/MS. A method was developed for the analysis of 31 pharmaceutical compounds in Lisbon's drinking water system, using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The method was validated through estimation of the linearity range, method detection and quantification limits, matrix effects, precision and accuracy. The method detection and quantification limit ranges were 0.009-10 and 0.03-33 ng/L, respectively. Analytes were quantified in water samples collected from the EPAL (Empresa Portuguesa das Águas Livres S.A.) supply system. Carbamazepine, atenolol, sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, sulfapyridine, sulfamethoxazole, acetaminophen, caffeine and erythromycin were quantified in the analysed samples.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
