RESUMO -A prolactina é um hormônio produzido pela hipófise, responsável por processos fisiológicos relacionados à reprodução, cuja principal função é a manutenção da lactação. Sua secreção é regulada por mecanismos hormonais e não-hormonais. Existem patologias relacionadas com o excesso de prolactina circulante. São as denominadas hiperprolactinemias e os prolactinomas de causas fisiológicas, farmacológicas, patológicas e idiopáticas. Os níveis de prolactina verificados em 79 mulheres analisadas por um laboratório particular de Brasília mostraram variações características de acordo com diferentes faixas etárias.Palavras-chave: prolactina, hiperprolactinemia, prolactinoma. Prolactin and its excess in non pregnant womenABSTRACT -The prolactin is a hormone synthesized by anterior pituitary, with action in many physiological mechanisms related to reproduction. Prolactin's principal action is to initiate and sustain lactation. Its secretion is regulated by hormonal and non-hormonal mechanisms. There are pathologies related with circulating prolactin excess. They are called hyperprolactinemia and prolactinoma, with physiological, pharmacological, pathological and idiopathic causes. The levels of prolactin in 79 women analyzed for a particular laboratory of Brasilia (Brazil) had shown to characteristic variations in accordance with different ages.
