Esse artigo destaca a relação existente entre a sociologia produzida pelo baiano Guerreiro Ramos na década de 1950 e a preferência pela publicação de seus textos em jornal. A hipótese trabalhada é a de que o jornal foi, à época, um meio de consagração e circulação de ideias sociológicas, bem como serviu como um espaço para o autor buscar consagrar a si e à sua particular compreensão de ciência em geral e da sociologia em específico. Para isso, examina um conjunto de artigos escritos na década de 1950 por Guerreiro Ramos e alguns de seus interlocutores, como Florestan Fernandes, Roger Bastide e Wilson Martins, destacando o uso da polêmica e da republicação de textos como ferramentas do autor para inserir-se no debate público. Ao final, conclui-se, de um lado, que o jornal é uma profícua fonte de pesquisa em pensamento social, devendo ser mais utilizada, e, de outro, que a proposta sociológica de Guerreiro Ramos permite repensar a história da institucionalização da disciplina no Brasil por meio do caminho da circulação de ideias e argumentos, ao invés da universidade.
