Na prática profissional, o cirurgião-dentista está sujeito a se deparar com situações de urgências e emergências a qualquer momento, nas quais muitas vezes não está apto para o manejo dessas ocorrências. Sendo assim, esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar e comparar o nível de conhecimento dos alunos do último ano do curso de Odontologia e dos cirurgiões-dentistas já formados em relação ao preparo para lidar com as emergências médicas no consultório odontológico. A amostra foi constituída por 70 voluntários, sendo metade estudantes e metade profissionais já formados, os quais responderam a um questionário. Os resultados mostraram que 40,0% dos participantes afirmaram já ter vivenciado uma emergência médica, sendo a lipotimia a mais citada. Ao relacionar as emergências com os tipos de procedimentos realizados, foi observado que 45,7% dos casos aconteceram diante de procedimentos cirúrgicos. Quando questionados sobre o kit emergencial, a maioria dos voluntários afirmou não ter um kit disponível e não saber utilizá-lo. Além disso, a maioria dos participantes afirmaram não se sentirem capacitados para realizar manobras de suporte básico de vida e relataram interesse em realizar um curso preparatório de suporte básico de vida. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre o grupo de cirurgiões-dentistas e o grupo de acadêmicos. Levando em conta a incidência significativa das emergências médicas no consultório odontológico e a falta de preparo dos participantes observada no presente estudo, sugere-se a necessidade da realização de cursos de capacitação tanto durante a graduação, quanto de forma periódica após a conclusão do curso.
