Bei gelindem Erwarmen des a-Naphthol-tithylathers mit wasserfreier Benzolsulfons$iure in Nitrobenzoll6sung bildet sich neben 4.4'-Dilthoxy-binaphthyl-(I. 1 ') der Benzolsulfonsaureester des p-Amino-phenols. Letzterer entsteht auch aus Phenylhydroxylamin und Benzolsulfonsaure in unpolaren L6sungsmitteln; demzufolge ist das Phenylhydroxylamin als das primare Reduktionsprodukt des Nitrobenzols in dieser Reaktion anzunehmen. -Die Ubertragung des Hydridions von der bei der Schollschen Reaktion als Zwischenprodukt auftretenden dihydroaromatischen Verbindung auf das als Acceptor wirkende Nitrobenzol ist ein durch die Benzolsulfonsaure katalysierter Vorgang. Die katalytische Wirkung dieser Saure auf die Hydridubertragung wurde an einem Modellversuch veranschaulicht. Es wurde 9.10-Dihydro-anthracen mit Benzolsulfondure in Nitrobenzoll6sung behandelt, wobei neben Anthracen ebenfalls der Benzolsulfonsiiureester des p-Amino-phenols entstand. In Abwesenheit von Benzolsulfonsaure findet keine Hydridiibertragung statt. -Der Mechanismus der Schollschen Reaktion wird diskutiert.
A. PROBLEMSTELLUNG UND DlSKUSSlONDie Schollsche Reaktionl.2) wird als ,,eine intramolekulare Dehydrierung aromatischer Kerne unter Bildung neuer Ringsysteme mit Hilfe von Aluminiumchlorid" bezeichnet 1). Diese Definition schliel3t mehrere Reaktionen aus, welche auf der intermolekularen Vereinigung zweier aromatischer Kerne beruhen und sich unter ahnlichen Bedingungen abspielen wie die eigentliche Schollsche Reaktion. Als erstes Beispiel einer solchen intermolekularen Kondensation kann die schon von FRIEDEL und CRAFE 1883 beobachtete Entstehung von Biphenyl aus Benzol unter der Einwirkung von Aluminiumchlorid gelten. Andere Reaktionen dieser Art sind von SCHOLL und Mitarbb. spater eingehend untersucht worded). Im folgenden seien diese Umsetmngen als intermolekulare Schollsche Reaktionen bezeichnet.Wegen ihrer meistens schlechten Ausbeuten und der storenden Nebenreaktionen haben die intermolekularen Schollschen Reaktionen bei weitem nicht die praktische Bedeutung ihrer intramolekularen Analoga erlangt. Dies mag wohl eine thermodynamische Ursache haben.
