The second harmonic generation (SHG) response was measured for arbitrarily oriented linear input polarization on Si(111) surfaces in rotational anisotropy experiments. We show for the first time, using the simplified bond hyperpolarizability model (SBHM), that the observed angular shifts of the nonlinear peaks and symmetry features—related to changes in the input polarization—help to identify the corresponding interface dipolar and bulk quadrupolar SHG sources, yielding excellent agreement with the experiment. Additionally, we evaluate for the s-in/p-out (sp) and p-in/p-out (pp)-polarization SHG intensities the contributions from the individual Si bonds. Furthermore, a relation between the four parameters arising from SBHM and six coefficients of the phenomenological SHG theory needed to reproduce experimental data is established.
In this review, we present nonlinear optical methods, based on the second and third order nonlinear polarization, especially in the context of material characterization tasks outside the area of life sciences-for which these techniques are mostly designed. An overview of application studies reported to date is given, together with a discussion on the advantages and limits of the individual methods. Furthermore, new ways of experimentally combining different optical concepts are introduced, and their potential for characterisation and inspection tasks is evaluated in the context of various case studies, including the investigation of semiconductor surfaces, metals and related corrosion products, as well as of organic materials.
Self-assembled monolayers of alkyl phosphonic acids on anodic aluminum oxide (AlOx) surfaces are important as dielectric layers in thin film electronic devices. Assessing the properties and quality of these monolayers on amorphous AlOx is limited to a few surface-sensitive methods. In this work, we study using nonlinear optical measurements the molecular ordering in n-alkyl phosphonic acids with various alkyl chain lengths (6 to 18 carbons) deposited on AlOx and show the influence of temperature on stability and conformational order. The results demonstrate that the octadecylphosphonic acid has fewest defects in the chain orientation. A detailed comparison of the longest and the shortest alkyl chain revealed different behavior in conformational ordering upon annealing.
