The Visual... Catalogue is a new generation of online public access catalogue (OPAC), adding to the integrated library systems (ILS) already available. Beyond the technological considerations, this resource was developed as part of a university-based research project in the humanities, and more specifically, in information science. It is intended to increase the visibility of university library collections and improve the autonomy of users. The project drew upon the knowledge and expertise of librarians in the field of information organisation. Implemented on an experimental basis at the Université Paris 8, and more completely on the portal of the Université d'Artois in 2006, this resource gradually became a research-action project with librarians and researchers working together to improve the library skills of users. With the implementation of Library 2.0, this article describes the positive impacts of numeric technologies as they are marshalled for reference work in university libraries.
