ABSTRACT. Functional anatomy of Prototl/aca (Leukoma) pectorilla (Lamarck) (Bivalvia, Veneridae). Prololhaca (Leu/wma) peclorilla (Lamarck, 1818) lives from the West Indies to Santa Catarina State, Brazil, in soft muddy beaches in quiet waters ofprotected bays with little amounls ofsuspended material. A study oflhe functional anatomy of P. peclorilla and its ecological aspects were underlaken. The anatomy and functioning of the stomach and the mechanisms for selection of palticles were observed. The siphons, ctenidia, labial palps and stomach were analised and related to the animal's natural environment. The siphons belong to type B (YONGE 1948), lhe clenidia lo type C (I a) (ATKINS 1937). The clenidia are h01l10rhabdic (RIDEWOOD 1903) and lhe stomach belongs lo type V (PURCHON 1960).
