pollen of a normal pollination with the amounts of diffusible hormones which appear in the ovary immediately after pollination and fertilization and with the amounts of inactive hormones in the ovary indicate that the changes in growth hormone concentrations following fertilization are the result of a substance in the pollen other than the growth hormones. It is suggested that this substance is part of an enzyme system.
Animal Toxicity.-A solution of 1 mg. per ml. of agrocybin was prepared in 0.7% sodium chloride solution and quantities ranging from 0.1 ml. to 1 ml. were injected into a tail vein of 16-18 g. Carworth Farms CFI male white mice. The larger the dose, the sooner the mice died. The animals receiving 1 mg. of agrocybin died within 1 hour, those receiving 0.1 mg. died in about 18 hours. The LD5o was less than 6 mg. per kg. body weight of white mice. Agrocybin caused a dermatitis in a human subject susceptible to bioformin. Because of its high toxicity and inactivation by blood, experiments on possible therapeutid action were not attempted. * This investigation was supported in part by grants from The Commonwealth Fund and The Lillia Babbitt Hyde Foundation.
a resident of Lautoka, Viti Levu, and an enthusiastic amateur botanist, has made several excursions to the western slopes of the Mt. Evans Range and has ascended the subsidiary southernmost peak, Mbotilamu, which is only slightly lower than Koroyanitu. As a result of Mr. Greenwood's excellent collections, which in recent years have been sent to the Arnold Arboretum for study, several new species of flowering plants were discovered on and near the Mt. Evans Range, including Elatostema Greenwoodii, Dysoxylum pilosum, Pterocymbium oceanicum and Tapeinosperma Greenwoodii. The unusual features of Mr. Greenwood's collections first called the writer's attention to this neglected area and gave it priority when the opportunity to pursue field work was offered. 3 Although representative specimens were obtained from all the plants mentioned, their exact botanical identification must await detailed study of the entire collection. 4 Pickering Peak of the Europeans, and the second isolated forested range of western Viti Levu. An ascent of this was subsequently made by the writer; it is somewhat lower than Koroyanitu, but is more isolated and offers a more difficult climb.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
