High-resolution seismic experiments, employing arrays of closely spaced, four-component ocean-bottom seismic recorders, were conducted at a site off western Svalbard and a site on the northern margin of the Storegga slide, off Norway to investigate how well seismic data can be used to determine the concentration of methane hydrate beneath the seabed. Data from P-waves and from S-waves generated by P-S conversion on reflection were inverted for P-and S-wave velocity (Vp and Vs), using 3D travel-time tomography, 2D ray-tracing inversion and 1D waveform inversion. At the NW Svalbard site, positive Vp anomalies above a sea-bottomsimulating reflector (BSR) indicate the presence of gas hydrate. A zone containing free gas up to 150-m thick, lying immediately beneath the BSR, is indicated by a large reduction in Vp without significant reduction in Vs. At the Storegga site, the lateral and vertical variation in Vp and Vs and the variation in amplitude and polarity of reflectors indicate a heterogeneous distribution of hydrate that is related to a stratigraphically mediated distribution of free gas beneath the BSR. Derivation of hydrate content from Vp and Vs was evaluated, using different models for how hydrate affects the seismic properties of the sediment host and different approaches for estimating the background velocity of the sediment host. The error in the average Vp of an interval of 20-m thickness is about 2.5%, at 95% confidence, and yields a resolution of hydrate concentration of about 3%, if hydrate forms a connected framework, or about 7%, if it is both pore-filling and framework-forming. At NW Svalbard, in a zone about 90-m thick above the BSR, a Biot-theory-based method predicts hydrate concentrations of up to 11% of pore space, and an effective-medium-based method predicts concentrations of up to 6%, if hydrate forms a connected framework, or 12%, if hydrate is both pore-filling and frameworkforming. At Storegga, hydrate concentrations of up to 10% or 20% were predicted, depending on the hydrate model, in a zone about 120-m thick above a BSR. With seismic techniques alone, we can only estimate with any confidence the average hydrate content of broad intervals containing more than one layer, not only because of the uncertainty in the layer-by-layer variation in lithology, but also because of the negative correlation in the errors of estimation of velocity between adjacent layers. In this investigation, an interval of about 20-m thickness (equivalent to between 2 and 5 layers in the model used for waveform inversion) was the smallest within which one could sensibly estimate the hydrate content. If lithological layering much thinner than 20-m thickness controls hydrate content, then hydrate concentrations within layers could significantly exceed or fall below the average values derived from seismic data.

This serial cross-sectional survey indicated that use of the EssenCES alone might be a good practical measure of treatment progress/responsivity. A longitudinal study would be an important next step in establishing the extent to which it would be useful in this regard.

The inadequacy of inpatient facilities for women with severe psychiatric and co-morbid difficulties has been repeatedly documented. The establishment of effective therapeutic programmes for women in medium psychiatric facilities is also in their infancy, and little research has been undertaken. This article describes the development of a 'best practice' psychological treatment programme for women with a dual diagnosis. Emphasis is placed on the need to develop further intensive gender-specific services using an established model for effective therapeutic service development. In addition to a detailed description of the group therapy programme, staff training initiatives, methods for ensuring treatment integrity and a methodology for service evaluation is given.

Background: There is an abundant literature on the unfavourable attitudes held by staff working in mental health care settings towards patients with borderline personality disorder. The aim of this study was to assess whether attendance at a training session about the neurobiological underpinnings of borderline personality disorder could improve knowledge and produce positive attitudinal change within staff members working in a low secure inpatient setting.Method: Staff knowledge and attitudes (Mental Health Locus of Origin, Empathic Concern and Perspective Taking) were assessed at baseline, post-training attendance and at an eight-week follow up.Results: Attendance at the training session was associated with significant increases in theoretical knowledge, Perspective Taking and Locus of Origin scores. However, there were no changes observed in Empathic Concern scores.Conclusion: This research suggests that a relatively brief training session, that utilises the neurobiological framework, can be effective in facilitating knowledge and attitudinal change for those working with borderline personality disorder. The implications of the findings are discussed along with suggestions for further research.

SUMMARY Parental expectations for their epileptic children were compared with those held for their non‐epileptic children. Parents were found to be less optimistic about their epileptic child's future achievements. These findings were linked with greater restrictiveness on the parents’ part, and the epileptic child's lower self‐esteem and academic achievement. The disparity between parent and teacher ratings of behaviour was discussed.

Findings echo themes from other psychiatric settings and provide a much needed consensus between service providers and users on which to base healthcare planning. The elucidation of gender-specific factors in effective therapeutic milieus requires more focussed research.

Problem-solving style has emerged in the literature as an important variable in the development and maintenance of affective disorders. Furthermore, the literature would suggest that it is related to other variables such as attributional style, achievement motivation and control in the mediation of the stress process. Research has been hampered and somewhat clouded by lack of clarity regarding the nature of the construct. It would appear to be a multidimensional construct, yet a suitable multifactorial measure is not available. The current paper reports on two studies (N = 408 and N = 611 respectively) which produced a 24-item six-factor measure. The factors were labelled helplessness, problem-solving control, creative problem-solving style, problem-solving confidence, avoidance style and approach style. The studies produced evidence that the utility of problem-solving style as an explanatory variable is enhanced when it is treated as a multidimensional construct. The factors appear to be differentially predictive of different affective states and clinical disorders. The data also support the 24-item measure as a useful, reliable and valid measure of problem-solving style.
