A search has been performed for the lepton-flavor-nonconserving reaction /x~+Ti--*• e~+Ti using a time-projection chamber. No candidate events were observed, resulting in a limit of r^I+ I i " >g " +Ti ? < L6X10-H (90o/o C.L.) r (p + Ti -• capture) for this reaction relative to ordinary muon capture. PACS numbers: 13.60.-r, ll.30.-j, 14.60.-z, 25.30.Mr Neutrinoless muon-electron conversion in the field of a nucleus /x-+ Z--e~ + Zhas been discussed as a potentially favorable process with which to search for lepton-flavor nonconservation. 1 Many attempts to incorporate multiple generations (flavors) into the standard model of weak interactions predict branching ratios for jju-^e conver-sion (1), ft-* ey y and fi-* 3e at the level of < 10~9 relative to ordinary flavor-conserving processes, depending on the masses and couplings of hypothetical neutral particles which might mediate leptonflavor-changing processes. 2 " 5 In some models, 5 mass limits in the multiteraelectronvolt range for new particles such as flavor-changing Higgs scalars and leptoquarks have been obtained from the experimental upper limits for these reactions. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
