INTRODUÇÃO: A cárie dentária causa problemas infantis como: dificuldades de mastigar, alterações no sono, mudanças no comportamento e menor rendimento escolar, o que pode ocasionar uma pior qualidade de vida. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar o impacto da cárie dentária na qualidade de vida relacionada a saúde bucal (QVRSB) de crianças e verificar as consequências das lesões cariosas em esmalte e dentina. METODOLOGIA: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com crianças de 8 e 10 anos, atendidas em clínica odontológica infantil de uma faculdade particular de Teresina-Piauí. A coleta de dados deu-se pela aplicação dos questionários CPQ8-10 (qualidade de vida) e sociodemográfico e exame clínico. Realizou-se análise descritiva dos dados e aplicou-se o teste Qui-quadrado de Pearson. Considerou-se significativo valor de p<0,05. RESULTADOS: Participaram 75 crianças, 57,3% do sexo masculino, 37,3% com 10 anos, 72,0% com experiência de cárie e 69,3% com necessidade de tratamento. O índice ceod (2,52±2,77) foi superior ao CPOD (1,18±1,58), pufa (0,14±0,45) e PUFA (0,05±0,27). A experiência de cárie piorou a QVRSB nos domínios: sintomas orais (40,7%, n=22, p=0,029) e bem estar emocional (44,4%, n=24, p=0,041). A necessidade de tratamento piorou a QVRSB no domínio limitação funcional (40,4%, n= 21, p=0,047). CONCLUSÃO: Crianças com experiência de cárie e necessidade de tratamento tiveram pior QVRSB. Houve alta prevalência de experiência de cárie e necessidade de tratamento entre as crianças. A consequência clínica de cárie não tratada mais prevalente foi envolvimento pulpar.
