Este artigo tem como objeto de estudo a gestão democrática nas escolas públicas, um princípio constitucional, regulamentado pela LDB e pelo Plano Nacional da Educação, que orienta as escolas a promover a participação coletiva da comunidade escolar na gestão da escola. O princípio prevê que fatores como a existência dos órgãos colegiados (conselhos escolares) sejam indispensáveis para se caracterizar a participação de pais, alunos e profissionais na gestão da escola. E sendo assim, tratar sobre o tema gera dúvidas sobre a efetiva participação desses membros na discussão de diferentes demandas e permite a busca por respostas para o seguinte questionamento: A gestão democrática com efetiva participação dos pais e profissionais da escola pública realmente acontece? Na tentativa de elucidar esse problema o objetivo geral deste artigo é analisar a efetividade da gestão democrática em uma escola pública municipal. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa de campo, de natureza exploratória, através de uma entrevista semiestruturada com profissionais da educação e pais de alunos. Os resultados apontaram que no segmento dos profissionais, principalmente, professores há maior atuação e compreensão sobre o tema, sua definição e finalidade, porém, entre os pais o assunto ainda é pouco difundido e a ausência é percebida nos diferentes contextos, inclusive na construção do PPP. Os pais não responderam a maioria das questões discursivas do questionário e representam o segmento de menor atuação nas ações, decisões, órgãos colegiados e demandas. Além disso, verificou-se que na escola os conselhos escolares estão desatualizados e o grêmio estudantil não existe. A eleição para escolha dos diretores parece ser o momento de maior participação coletiva e acontece a cada dois anos. Em suma, estratégias de estímulo precisam ser planejadas para promover melhor conhecimento do tema pelos pais e maior comprometimento na relação família-escola.
