The research paper showed that the major causes of boat and ferry accidents in Nigeria include human factor errors, natural factors, and technical factors. The safety of life and navigation at sea are important to coastal, flag states and the entire international shipping community in sustaining the growth of global sea trade. National governments and indeed the Federal government of Nigeria have committed substantial resources and efforts on programmes aimed at reducing the incidence of accident involving marine vessels at sea. The primary causes of boat and ferry accident considered in this paper include human, natural, and technical factors. Human factor constitutes the core causes of boat and ferry accidents in Nigeria inland waterways, as reflected in the calculated value of X 2 = 0.368, a value within the acceptance region as it is less than the theoretical value of X 2 = 7.815. The human factors include the following: overloading, over speeding, collision, night sailing without adequate light, grounding, overcrowding etc. Natural factors investigated are: sea condition (current), tides and tidal stream, severe wind, reduced visibility, stormy seas, darkness, rainstorms and waves. This research work on material selection for subsea pipeline construction was carried out to analyze and recommend suitable material option that satisfies DNV-OS-F101 standard for subsea pipeline constructions which will not succumb to extreme conditions and performs well in unpredictable conditions in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. Crude oil is mainly transported through pipelines, structural failure of the pipelines will severely affect oil production processes and will cause huge economic loss. Data on oil pipeline failures in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria were gathered and the major causes were; corrosion, operational error, third party activities and mechanical failures which were associated with the construction materials and structures of the pipelines. Hence, material selection for subsea pipelines is of vital importance. This paper makes use of Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) Theory to make fuzzy evaluation of different material options for pipeline construction. Statistical data and experts’ knowledge were integrated in addressing data limitation. This paper utilizes related weights and normalized scores based on experts’ judgements and with the aid of value engineering (VE) method, material criteria based on DNV-OS-F101 standard and TOPSIS Theory to achieve the best material option. The analysis has demonstrated that the estimation of TOPSIS is reliable. The outcome obtained can be used to assist the decision maker in the selection of the best material option suitable for the construction of subsea pipeline in Niger Delta region.
This research was undertaken to determine the effects of corrosion on material performance using mild steel and Aluminum as selected material in seawater media. The result from the experiment showed higher corrosion rate in uncoated mild steel coupon as higher corrosion rate ranges from 0.0494 mmpy, 0.0565 mmpy, and 0.0656 mmpy was evident, while a reduction in corrosion rate from 0.0369mmpy, 0.0432 mmpy and 0.0452mmpy was observed in the fourth week, fifth week and sixth week. Corrosion rate for coated mild steel ranges from 0.0396 mmpy in the first week and reduces to 0.0333 mmpy and continually reduces to 0.0206 mmpy in the sixth week. From the hardness testing device using MITECH 320, uncoated Mild steel metal specimen gave an average Brinell hardness reading of 112 before immersion and 105 after immersion to seawater. Also, the tensile strength of the uncoated mild steel specimen deteriorated from 414 Mpa before immersion to 403Mpa after immersion to seawater media. Also, uncoated Aluminum specimen gave a brinell average reading of 163 before immersion and 152 after immersion to the seawater media. Likewise, the tensile strength result of the aluminum specimen gave 776M pa before immersion and 744 Mpa after immersion to the seawater media. The overall result from weight loss technique and metal hardness using MITECH 320 showed aluminum metal is more resistive to corrosion attack.
