Nas regiões de clima quente, como é em ge ral o clima da maior-parte do Brasil, onde os serviços de sa neamento deixam muito a desejar, a febre tifóide apresentase sob a forma endêmica e epidêmica, com grandes prejuízos sócio-econômicos para a nação. O agente causador da febre tifóide pertence ao gênero Salmonella. É um bacilo, peritríquio, de grande motilidade flagelar Gram negativo e portanto pouco sensível às sulfas, aos antibióticos comuns e aos corantes do grupo das trifenilmetanas. Ê sensível , porém a um antibiótico de largo espectro, o cloranfenicol, considerado, por isso, o me dicaménto específico na cura da febre tifóide. O meio ideal de cultura da salmonela é o ai calino; bile, sangue, enzimas intestinais, urina alcalina,agar, gelatinas. No organismo vive e prolifera nos seguintes órgãos: vesícula büiar, intestino delgado, principalmente nos gânglios mesentéricos, fígado, baço, meninges, liquor, pele , sob a forma de embolias sépticas (manchas arroxeadas), e raramen te nos pulmões.
