O presente artigo procura evidenciar as relações políticas e sanitárias entre duas capitais latino-americanas – Rio de Janeiro e Montevidéu – na segunda metade do século XIX que vivenciaram o enfrentamento de doenças epidêmicas como o cólera asiático e a febre amarela e a busca por mão de obra imigrante. Procuraremos demonstrar que havia circulação de notícias e de conhecimento entre os profissionais da saúde das duas cidades, especialmente através das teses das faculdades de medicina de Montevidéu; bem como evidenciaremos como essas cidades portuárias vivenciavam a interdependência entre seus portos, rivalizaram e buscavam estabelecer medidas de combate às epidemias por ambos os países neste período.
Analisa os congressos sanitários internacionais que aconteceram na América do Sul em 1873 e 1887, e que envolveram o Império do Brasil e as Repúblicas da Argentina e do Uruguai, numa perspectiva de integração a eventos similares ocorridos na Europa e na América do Norte a partir da segunda metade do século XIX. Discutem-se os interesses dos países envolvidos no que se refere às relações comerciais e ao fluxo imigratório europeu, diretamente atingidos pelas epidemias, e apontam-se as repercussões desses acordos sanitários nos demais países do continente americano. As convenções sanitárias americanas do final do século XIX representaram as primeiras iniciativas do continente para solucionar os problemas de saúde pública internacional.
O objetivo do presente artigo é discutir a produção científica da Comissão Técnica presente na Convenção Sanitária de 1887, realizada pelo Império do Brasil e pelas repúblicas da Argentina e do Uruguai na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Procurou-se evidenciar os espaços institucionais de produção de ciência, os principais personagens – especialmente os médicos – que participaram dos experimentos científicos e a produção científica ligada à Convenção Sanitária. Buscava-se, naquele momento, comprovar se a carne de charque – produto platino largamente consumido no Brasil – servia como meio de transmissão do cólera morbus, epidemia que atingia a América do Sul naquele momento. Os médicos realizaram experimentos no Laboratório de Fisiologia do Museu Nacional, no Rio de Janeiro, e a documentação encontra-se no Arquivo Histórico do Itamaraty. Percebe-se, com este trabalho, os fortes vínculos entre os interesses da ciência e os vínculos comerciais desses países.

O trabalho aqui apresentado objetiva investigar o preconceito racial da sociedade maranhense sobre o personagem principal, Dr. Raimundo, na obra O mulato do abolicionista Aluísio Azevedo. Outrossim, estudar o uso da linguagem em que, preconceituosamente, no século XIX, se submetiam, ao sabor do cientificismo, negros e descendentes. A partir da literatura historiográfica e antropológica sobre o tema do racismo brasileiro, bem como a análise da linguagem empregada no romance, buscou-se analisar tal ocorrência na composição naturalista. Na produção azevediana, que opera eminentemente como crítica social, averiguar determinada prática que perpassa gerações no Brasil e no mundo.
