Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the relationship between strategic remodelling of the retail store and the performance of companies in the retail sector. Design/methodology/approach The method used was a quantitative and descriptive survey of 93 cases from a sample of 329 retail stores from three chains that had remodelled some of their retail stores. Findings The results showed that strategic remodelling improved the performance of the stores surveyed, demonstrating the importance of retail store management as a strategic resource that can improve performance and competitiveness. Applying the balanced scorecard (BSC) perspectives, the retail store strategies had a greater influence on the dimension of internal processes than on other dimensions. Specifically, lighting is the redesign strategy that provides the best performance result. Practical implications The findings offer support to managers who are considering modifications to the retail store. Decisions about strategies related to external visual communication, internal layout, internal visual communication, fixtures, painting of the store, lighting, location of the store and visual merchandising can make a difference in the pursuit for better performance across a range of dimensions. Originality/value This paper contributes to both the retail strategy and marketing literature by evidencing the link between specific retail remodelling strategies and performance using the BSC dimensions.
The perceptions of spatial and human crowding are factors that can influence in a relevant way the choice of the consumer by one or another store. The purpose of this article is to verify how the store environment crowding influences the consumer's perception of value and purchase intention. For this study, an experimental study was carried out. The research verified that the perception of crowding directly influences the perception of value of the environment of the point of sale and indirectly the purchase intention, being the perception of value the mediator between the spatial crowding and the purchase intention. The study showed that lower spatial crowding implies a greater perception of value and, consequently, a greater purchase intention. The results can guide the managers' decision about the retail store furniture.
This case presents a turning-point in the history of the company Expolight, a family company that is several years in the market working in the commercial furniture segment. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which is one of the leading furniture manufacturers poles of Brazil, being the products of this region recognized for their high quality. The case presents a decision point where the company needs to choose between keeping their market position, or accept the challenge of a new client, taking into consideration the investments and risks involved. The purpose of this Educational Case is to promote discussion and reflection on topics such as entrepreneurship, strategic management, innovation management and marketing, exercising decision-making based on the data presented. It also has element to the debate on globalization, partnerships and organizational culture.
RESUMO A performance organizacional é um dos principais objetos de estudo da administração moderna. Com base nestas informações, o objetivo desta revisão é analisar como a estrutura, a cultura e a estratégia podem influenciar na performance das organizações sob a ótica das metáforas de Morgan (1996). De forma a atingir os objetivos desta pesquisa, que se caracteriza como qualitativa e exploratória, foi elaborado um referencial teórico que serviu como fonte de dados, posteriormente analisados por intermédio da técnica análise de conteúdo. Foi possível concluir que a utilização das concepções de metáforas concede a capacidade de enxergar diferentes ângulos de uma situação, mostrando como diferentes dimensões ou partes de uma organização podem coexistir, apoiando, reforçando ou contradizendo uma à outra. Deste modo, como acréscimo à comunidade acadêmica e empresarial, este estudo reúne uma revisão e interação de conceitos encontrados na literatura, que podem contribuir no entendimento da performance organizacional e os fatores que a influenciam, ampliando assim as perspectivas sobre o tema.
