Many plant species possess structures on their leaves that often harbour predatory or fungivorous mites. These so‐called domatia are thought to mediate a mutualistic interaction; the plant gains protection because mites decimate plant pathogenic fungi or herbivores, whereas the mites find shelter in the domatia. We tested this hypothesis using two species of coffee (Coffea spp.) plants that posses domatia consisting of small cavities at the underside of the leaves, and which often harbour mites. We assessed densities of domatia, of the predatory mite Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark and Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and of herbivorous mites Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) and Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) on Coffea arabica L. (Rubiaceae) and Coffea canephora Pierre in the field. Over a period of 50 days, C. arabica harboured on average 7.5 times more predatory mites and 0.4–0.66 fewer prey mites than C. canephora. Hence, the higher density of predatory mites on C. arabica could not be explained by higher densities of prey. However, the density of domatia on C. arabica was on average 1.65 times higher than on C. canephora, and within each species, leaves with higher densities of domatia also harboured more predators. This suggests a positive effect of domatia on predatory mites. In the laboratory, survival of adult female predatory mites on leaves of C. arabica with open domatia was indeed significantly higher than on leaves with closed domatia. Hence, predatory mites benefited from the domatia. However, plants with higher densities of domatia did not harbour fewer herbivores. Taken together, our study only provides partial evidence for a mutualistic interaction between coffee plants and predatory mites, mediated by domatia.
-Coffee plants have domatia on their leaves harboring mites, and the predatory mites can also use such structures. Here we evaluated the effect of the domatia on the predatory mite Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma, manipulating these structures on the leaves of Coffea arabica L. var. Catuaí. The tests were done using arenas made of coffee leaves placed up side down inside petri dishes. The survivorship of I. zuluagai was evaluated when released on leaves with closed domatia (T1); leaves with open domatia plus prey (T2) and leaves with open domatia without prey (T3). The experiment was checked every 24h, measuring the number of alive adults, oviposition site and the number of I. zuluagai eggs/treatment. Significant difference was found between treatments. Mites were alive until the end of the experiments on leaves with open domatia (T2 and T3), which did not happen on leaves with closed domatia (T1). The predators oviposited preferentially inside the domatia on treatments with open domatia, and on the edge of the leaves, next to the moist cotton bordering the leaves, on the treatment with closed domatia. The results indicate the role of domatia on the survivorship of the predators on the coffee plants, suggesting a possible mutualist interactions plant-predator. On coffee crops, a mutualistic plant-predator interaction mediated by domatia could be used in practices of natural biological control, selecting coffee plants with domatia to harbor predatory mites and thereby protecting plants against harmful herbivore mites.KEY WORDS: Biological control, plant-predator mutualism, coffee plant RESUMO -Os cafeeiros apresentam domácias em suas folhas que abrigam ácaros, inclusive ácaros predadores que podem também fazer uso dessas estruturas.
Palavras-chave: Controle alternativo, inseticidas botânicos, grãos armazenados.ABSTRACT: Insecticidal potential of essential oils on Tribolium castaneum in stored maize. The current work aimed at to investigate the insecticide potential of essential oils of Croton heliotropiifolius, Croton pulegiodorus, Myracrodruon urundeuva and Ocimum basilicum on adults of Tribolium castaneum in stored maize. For each oil, it were performed fumigation tests, repellency and the effect on the instantaneous rate of increase (r i .), in five concentrations (0; 5; 10; 15 e 20 μL). Bioassays were carried out under constant temperature conditions (28±2 °C), relative humidity (70±5%) and scot phase of 24 hours. In fumigation different concentrations of test oils were applied on filter paper strips attached on the bottom of the fumigation chamber cover (1.5 L), which contained 20 grams of food substrate and 10 unsexed adults of T. castaneum. The insect mortality was recorded after 48 hours of exposure. The repellency tests were performed in arenas composed of two pots connected to a central box. In a pot it was deposited feed substrate, with concentrations of the essential oil, in...
