A case of cerebral granular cell tumor (GCT) is reported. Histologically, the growth was composed of benign astrocytes, granular cells and transitional forms between both elements. Glial fibrillary acidic protein was detected in the glial component and, to a lesser extent, in the granular cells. Alpha-1-antichymotrypsin was demonstrated in the latter component only. Ultrastructural study also supported the evidence that neoplastic astrocytes became granular cells. The survey of the literature and our own results suggest that GCTs in this particular location, even when histologically benign, seem to have a worse prognosis than the low-grade supratentorial astrocytomas.

This paper presents the result of the analysis of the data gathered from 20 Role Models (RM) case studies regarding their successful heritage-led rural regeneration models. For the study and comparison of the narratives of these Role Models two tools were used: the Community Capitals Framework, which studied the transference of capitals in each process and the identification of six Systemic Innovation Areas that allow this capital transference. A multilevel repository of best practices has been developed allowing the identification of common features, mechanisms for mobilisation of capitals and required resources that will facilitate the replication in other rural areas. The results of this work support the acknowledgement of the contribution of culture, together with cultural and natural heritage, to economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability in rural areas reinforcing the role of culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development.

The evaluation of conventional and biofunctional sperm parameters is of fundamental importance for assessing male reproductive function. Among these, sperm motility is one of the most important parameters. Indeed, asthenozoospermia is a frequent cause of male infertility. Sperm motility depends on mitochondrial function and the measurement of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) better accounts for the function of this intracellular organelle. On the basis of these premises, the present study assessed whether the MMP predicts sperm motility at 4 h in patients with low or normal MMP. To accomplish this, 31 men were enrolled. Sperm analysis was conducted according to the WHO 2010 criteria. Particular attention was paid to the evaluation of MMP after liquefaction (T0) using JC-1 staining by flow cytometry. Sperm total and progressive motility were measured at T0 and after 4 h from seminal fluid collection (T4). Patients were divided into two groups based on their sperm mitochondrial function at T0. Group A (n = 18) was composed of men with normal mitochondrial function since they had a percentage of spermatozoa with low MMP (L-MMP) below the normal reference value of our laboratory (<36.5%). In contrast, group B (n = 13) was made up of men with impaired sperm mitochondrial function (L-MMP > 36.5%). Group A had a slight but not significant reduction in total and progressive sperm motility at T4 compared with the values recorded at T0. In contrast, patients in group B showed a significant decline in both total and progressive sperm motility at T4 compared with T0 (p < 0.05). The results of this study showed that worse mitochondrial function, assessed by staining with JC1, is associated with a significant decline in sperm motility over time. These findings may be of clinical relevance in programs of assisted reproduction techniques. Based on our knowledge, there is no other evidence in the literature that has shown this relationship in healthy men with low MMP of idiopathic etiology, but normozoospermics according to the WHO 2010 criteria.

Despite the recognized potential of nature-based solutions (NBSs) to support climate adaptation, there are still wide barriers for a wider uptake of such NBS in urban areas. While tailored NBS tools could facilitate and accelerate this process, a comprehensive mapping of their availability and capacity to respond to cities’ challenges is missing. This research aims to provide an overview of tools that intend to facilitate the uptake of NBS for urban climate adaptation supporting cities in overcoming their challenges. To do so, this paper (i) presents the results of interviews and workshops with municipal officers and decision-makers from different European cities that identified the challenges they experience with NBS uptake; (ii) selects and reviews NBS tools and (iii) analyzes them on their capacity to address these implementation challenges. Our research revealed four key challenges that municipal officers experience: resources availability; level of expertise, know-how or competence; the institutional setting, and collaborative governance and planning. The results from the tools’ review show that existing tools can support overcoming a lack of expertise (31), but, to a smaller extent, can also be of use when experiencing the institutional setting (13), availability of resources (11), and collaborative governance and planning (10) as a challenge. This work provides researchers and tool developers with insights into potential market saturation as well as scarcity of certain types of tools that would match cities’ challenges, highlighting needs and opportunities for new tool development.

Rural areas in Europe host more than 55% of the overall population and embed a unique and peculiar cultural and natural heritage. Nevertheless, they are facing common issues of disengagement, depopulation and economic and social crises. Rural communities are increasingly interested in setting up inclusive and participatory regeneration processes, but participatory planning experiences in rural areas are still limited. This paper introduces the Community-based Heritage Management and Planning methodology (CHMP) developed within the RURITAGE project, and analyzes and presents the results of its implementation in six demonstrators around Europe and beyond. The methodology is based on the establishment of Rural Heritage Hubs (RHH), intended as the community of local stakeholders and a physical place to run the co-creation activities. We used four types of feedback—online survey, in-presence survey, consultations and interviews with RHH Coordinators—to analyze the implementation of the CHMP. The research findings show that through built capital (RHH places activated) and through the activation of local social and human capitals (RHH communities engaged in the process), participatory processes can attract local communities and engage them into the development and the implementation of local regeneration plans, fostering heritage ownership and inclusion.

RESUMO -Racional -Os defeitos da linha média podem ser congênitos ou adquiridos.Os procedimentos convencionais para correção desse defeito geralmente envolvem grandes incisões, com grandes descolamentos de pele e tecido celular subcutâneo. O uso da videocirurgia para a correção desses defeitos, ainda é controverso. Objetivos -Realizar descrição inédita na literatura, mostrando a experiência inicial do uso da robótica nas reconstruções de linha média, associando a cirurgia minimamente invasiva à técnicas consagradas como Rives/Stoppa e separação de componentes. Métodos -Foram operados cinco pacientes no mesmo hospital, pela mesma equipe, usando o sistema robótico da Vinci S. Resultados -Foram três mulheres e dois homens, sem mortalidade na amostra. Duas pacientes foram reoperadas com hérnia pelo tunel entre os músculos retos do abdomen e aponeurose posterior, com fechamento dos mesmos na reoperação. Conclusões -O procedimento robótico para reconstrução da linha média mostrou-se factível e esteticamente aceitável. Tem a vantagem de seguir os princípios tradicionais aventados para a parede abdominal através de via minimamente invasiva. ABCDDV/857ABSTRACT-Background -The weakness of the linea alba can be caused by congenital and aquired factors. The conventional procedure to correct these imperfections generally involve large incisions with big detachments of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The use of videosurgery for the repair of these weaknesses is still controversy. Aim -To describe a new procedure using robotics in the repair of the linea alba, associating minimally invasive tecniques by Rives/Stoppa and component separation tecniques. Methods -Five patients undergone surgery in the same hospital, the same operating team and using the Da Vinci S. robotics equipment. ResultsThree women and two men undergone surgery, with no mortality. Two of these patients were re-operated due a recurrent hernia between muscle and posterior sheath that was closed in the re-access. Conclusions -The robotic procedure in the reconstruction of the linea alba showed itself feasible and aesthetically acceptable. Also, in advantage, the procedure follows the traditional principals reputable by experts of the abdominal wall trough minimally invasive surgery.
