Abstract. A precise knowledge of the spatial distribution of taxa is essential for decision-making processes in land management and biodiversity conservation, both for present and under future global change scenarios. This is a key base for several scientific disciplines (e.g. macro-ecology, biogeography, evolutionary biology, spatial planning, or environmental impact assessment) that rely on species distribution maps. An atlas summarizing the distribution of European amphibians and reptiles with 50 × 50 km resolution maps based on ca. 85 000 grid records was published by the Societas Europaea Herpetologica (SEH) in 1997. Since then, more detailed species distribution maps covering large parts of Europe became available, while taxonomic progress has led to a plethora of taxonomic changes including new species descriptions. To account for these progresses, we compiled information from different data sources: published in books and websites, ongoing national atlases, personal data kindly provided to the SEH, the 1997 European Atlas, and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Databases were homogenised, deleting all information except species names and coordinates, projected to the same coordinate system (WGS84) and transformed into a 50 × 50 km grid. The newly compiled database comprises more than 384 000 grid and locality records distributed across 40 countries. We calculated species richness maps as well as maps of Corrected Weighted Endemism and defined species distribution types (i.e. groups of species with similar distribution patterns) by hierarchical cluster analysis using Jaccard's index as association measure. Our analysis serves as a preliminary step towards an interactive, dynamic and online distributed database system (NA2RE system) of the current spatial distribution of European amphibians and reptiles. The NA2RE system will serve as well to monitor potential temporal changes in their distributions. Grid maps of all species are made available along with this paper as a tool for decision-making and conservation-related studies and actions. We also identify taxonomic and geographic gaps of knowledge that need to be filled, and we highlight the need to add temporal and altitudinal data for all records, to allow tracking potential species distribution changes as well as detailed modelling of the impacts of land use and climate change on European amphibians and reptiles.

Grass snakes (Natrix natrix) represent one of the most widely distributed snake species of the Palaearctic region, ranging from the North African Maghreb region and the Iberian Peninsula through most of Europe and western Asia eastward to the region of Lake Baikal in Central Asia. Within N. natrix, up to 14 distinct subspecies are regarded as valid. In addition, some authors recognize big‐headed grass snakes from western Transcaucasia as a distinct species, N. megalocephala. Based on phylogenetic analyses of a 1984‐bp‐long alignment of mtDNA sequences (ND4+tRNAs, cyt b) of 410 grass snakes, a nearly range‐wide phylogeography is presented for both species. Within N. natrix, 16 terminal mitochondrial clades were identified, most of which conflict with morphologically defined subspecies. These 16 clades correspond to three more inclusive clades from (i) the Iberian Peninsula plus North Africa, (ii) East Europe and Asia and (iii) West Europe including Corso‐Sardinia, the Apennine Peninsula and Sicily. Hypotheses regarding glacial refugia and postglacial range expansions are presented. Refugia were most likely located in each of the southern European peninsulas, Corso‐Sardinia, North Africa, Anatolia and the neighbouring Near and Middle East, where the greatest extant genetic diversity occurs. Multiple distinct microrefugia are inferred for continental Italy plus Sicily, the Balkan Peninsula, Anatolia and the Near and Middle East. Holocene range expansions led to the colonization of more northerly regions and the formation of secondary contact zones. Western Europe was invaded from a refuge within southern France, while Central Europe was reached by two distinct range expansions from the Balkan Peninsula. In Central Europe, there are two contact zones of three distinct mitochondrial clades, and one of these contact zones was theretofore completely unknown. Another contact zone is hypothesized for Eastern Europe, which was colonized, like north‐western Asia, from the Caucasus region. Further contact zones were identified for southern Italy, the Balkans and Transcaucasia. In agreement with previous studies using morphological characters and allozymes, there is no evidence for the distinctiveness of N. megalocephala. Therefore, N. megalocephala is synonymized with N. natrix.

Using virtually range-wide sampling for three pond turtle taxa (Emys orbicularis galloitalica,\ud E. o. hellenica, E. trinacris), we analyse gene flow across their southern Italian contact zone.\ud Based on population genetic analyses of 15 highly polymorphic microsatellite loci and a\ud mitochondrial marker, we show that the general genetic pattern matches well with the current\ud taxon delimitation. Yet, single individuals with conflicting genetic identity suggest\ud translocation of turtles by humans. In addition, we identify in south-western France and the\ud vicinity of Rome populations being heavily impacted by introduced turtles. Cline analyses\ud reveal that the major genetic break between E. o. galloitalica and E. o. hellenica corresponds\ud well with the currently accepted intergradation zone in southern Italy. However, introgression\ud is largely unidirectional from E. o. galloitalica into E. o. hellenica. In the distribution\ud range of the latter subspecies, genetic footprints of E. o. galloitalica are evident along most\ud of the Italian east coast. Our results corroborate that E. o. galloitalica was introduced long\ud ago in Corsica and Sardinia and naturalized there. Gene flow between E. orbicularis and\ud E. trinacris is negligible, with the Strait of Messina matching well with the narrow cline centre\ud between the two species. This contrasts with other Mediterranean freshwater turtle species\ud with extensive transoceanic gene flow. Compared to the two subspecies of E. orbicularis,\ud the Sicilian E. trinacris shows an unexpectedly strong population structuring, a finding\ud also of some relevance for conservation. The differences between the two taxon pairs\ud E. orbicularis/E. trinacris and E. o. galloitalica/E. o. hellenica support their current taxonomic\ud classification and make them attractive objects for follow-up studies to elucidate the\ud underlying mechanisms of speciation by comparing their propertie

Tail autotomy is one of the main anti‐predator mechanisms of lacertid lizards, but it has been predicted that it is only retained in its full capacity when its benefits exceed its costs (Arnold, 1988). To test this hypothesis, ease of tail shedding was examined in a number of continental and insular lacertid lizard populations, each of which showed a different shedding capacity. Tails are shed more easily in those continental and insular populations where there is a greater probability of predation. In insular populations not subjected to strong predation, the tail tends to be retained. The relationship of these findings to insular Mediterranean lizard populations and to the extinction of the Balearic lizard, Podarcis lilfordi are discussed.
