The selected fuels for this study were three typical PCI coals of different ranks and origins identified as A (Colombian), B (Russian), and C (Australian), and Brazilian charcoal fines from wood carbonization, named as CC. Resumo O alto-forno (AF) corresponde à principal rota de produção de ferro-gusa, matériaprima do aço. O maior desafio para as usinas siderúrgicas, nos dias de hoje, é a redução do consumo de coque, principal combustível utilizado no AF. Diante disso, o processo de injeção de carvão pulverizado (PCI-Pulverized Coal Injection) é largamente empregado para substituir parte do coque utilizado por carvões de menor custo. A fim de estudar a combustibilidade de carvões e outros combustíveis sólidos com potencial para ser utilizado em PCI, o Laboratório de Siderurgia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (LaSid-UFRGS) desenvolveu um simulador capaz de avaliar os fenômenos envolvidos na combustão desses materiais em condições semelhantes às encontradas no AF, permitindo selecionar combustíveis, ou misturas desses, que sejam mais apropriados ao AF. Um dos principais diferenciais do equipamento é a possibilidade de coleta tanto de gases de combustão quanto de char (resíduo da combustão). Portanto, a eficiência de combustão pode ser avaliada dessas duas formas. Este trabalho tem por objetivos apresentar a automação do ensaio de combustão realizado pelo simulador de PCI do LaSid-UFRGS e mostrar alguns resultados de ensaios realizados.. ResumoEste trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a combustibilidade de misturas carvão nacional, do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, para injeção em altos-fornos. O estudo foi realizado através de ensaios de combustão no simulador de PCI do Laboratório de Siderurgia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (LaSid/UFRGS). Os carvões empregados foram carvão nacional, carvões importados e misturas destes tendo o baixo volátil importado como base. Os resultados mostraram que a combustibilidade medida pelo burnout foi proporcional ao teor de matéria volátil. Foi verificado efeito sinérgico nas misturas, onde o carvão alto volátil (CC) exerceu uma maior interação com o carvão base baixo volátil (CA) do que o carvão brasileiro (CB). Uma adição de 10% de CC proporcionou uma eficiência de combustão na mistura CA:CC superior a uma adição de até 30% de CB na mistura CA:CB. A partir de 30% de CC e 50% de CB não houve variação significativa nas eficiências de combustão em relação aos carvões individuais CC e CB.
