Il écrivait :Une « histoire historique » [ … ] , cela veut dire ou voudrait dire l'histoire d'une littérature, à une époque donnée, dans ses rapports avec la vie sociale de cette époque. Et je n'ai pas besoin de dire qu'ainsi conçue une telle histoire présenterait, en effet, des « aspects inconnus ».
