In Brazil, each region has its own cultural identity regarding accent, gastronomy, customs, all of which may reflect in its literature. Specially, we believe that country's background and contextual features are directly related to what people read. Hence, we perform a cross-state comparison analysis based on Brazilian reading preferences through a multipartite network model. Also, we explore the effects of socioeconomic and demographic factors on favorite books and writing genres. Such cross-state analyses highlight how the country is culturally rich, where each region has its own distinctive culture. Our findings offer great opportunities for the Brazilian book industry by enhancing current knowledge on social indicators related to reading preferences.
Combining human expertise with book-consumers data may generate what is needed to sustain constant changes experienced in the book publishing market. Then, building and making available datasets that entirely comprise the essential elements of the book industry ecosystem is essential. However, little has been done in such a context for non-English languages, such as Portuguese. Hence, we introduce PPORTAL, a public domain Portuguese-language literature dataset composed of books-related metadata. After an overview of its building process and content, we discuss a brief exploratory data analysis to summarize its main characteristics. We also highlight potential applications, showing how PPORTAL is useful as a resource on different research domains.
Many datasets are published in English to get more engagement, popularity and reach within a research community. Indeed, most sciences are language-agnostic and thrive on publicly available data. However, such a claim is not always valid for Arts, where Literature and Music are two examples of fields that heavily rely on the language of the work. Especially in Literature, combining human expertise with book consumers’ data may generate what is needed to sustain constant changes experienced in the book publishing market. Therefore, we introduce PPORTAL, the first public domain Portuguese-language literature dataset that is composed of a wide variety of book-related metadata. Afterintroducing its building process and content, we present an exploratory data analysis with a quantitative description of its main features. We also show its usability as a resource on different research domains through examples of real-world applications, as well as pointing out other potential applications.
Analyzing the success of books is a matter of interest among publishers, professional book reviewers, expert writers, and even curious readers. Such a task has many influencing factors concerning the intrinsic content and quality of the book (e.g., interest, novelty, writing style, and engaging plot) and others regarding external factors such as social context, author relationships, and luck for publication. Faced with so many variables, recognizing a successful literary work is a challenging endeavor even for specialists in the publishing market. Our objective is: to explore a dataset of books in the Portuguese language created to obtain more knowledge about the different variables of success in the literary context; to understand and evaluate the metrics collected that indicate new perceptions about books using graphical views.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
