In this study, the physical and chemical characteristics of Bambusa vulgaris ex J.C. Wendl. var.vulgaris (Bambusa vulgaris) aged 1, 2 and 3 years were evaluated. The objective was to train, validate and evaluate the efficiency of artificial neural networks (ANNs) as predictive tools to estimate bamboo stem energy density grown commercially in northeastern Brazil. For that, samples were collected in a commercial plantation and managed for energy production, determining the energy properties. Among all the characteristics analyzed, basic apparent density was the one with major correlation with bamboo stem energy density. This factor has a great advantage because it is easy to estimate, determined both by dry mass at 0% moisture, and at saturated mass. Also, the precision of ANNs was verified when associated with basic density, as a predictor of bamboo stem energy density, showing low standard error (Syx%, 1.52) and high coefficient of determination (R² = 0.98). ANN-estimated values had no statistical difference (t cal 0.58 ≤ t tab 2.08) with energy density estimated in the laboratory. Therefore, this tool was efficient, being recommended to predict the energetic density of the species under study, with basic density as the only predictive variable.
EFFECT OF ARTIFICIAL WEATHERING ON WOOD LAMINATES COLOR TREATED WITH TWO FINISHING PRODUCTS.ABSTRACT: Weathering is one of the main reasons for the degradation of wood, especially its color. The application of finishes minimizes these effects. This study aimed to monitor the effect of artificial weathering on wood veneer of the species cumaru (Dipteryx odorata) and pau marfim (Balfourodendron riedelianum) with two finishes, the marine varnish and Cetol, with monitoring using a spectrophotometer. The samples were subjected to cycles of exposure to weathering for 20, 40, 52, 76, 124, 226, 430, 838 and 960 hours. The colorimetric parameters (L*, a*, b*, C and h*) were measured before treatment, after application of the products and during the weathering time intervals. The application of finishes darkened veneer of cumaru wood and pau marfim in nature. However, in higher weathering times, both species returned to a lighter color, and even became lighter than the natural wood. The use of Cetol was more efficient, giving greater stability in the conservation of wood color of the species studied.
ENERGETIC DENSITY OF Tachigali vulgaris WOOD BY DIAMETRIC CLASS IN TWO EXPERIMENTAL PLANTS IN THE AMAZON ABSTRACT:This paper aims to analyze the energy productivity of two experimental Tachigali vulgaris plantations in Amapá, in distinct ecosystems and ages, from the difference of diametric classes. 21 trees (by planting) were collected in 7 diameter classes. Samples of cross-sections of the trunk were collected to analyze the maximum moisture and basic density in different axial positions (base, middle and top). The higher heating value, energetic density, volatile materials, ash content and dry biomass were analyzed by diameter class. The data were evaluated through analysis of variance, test of means and linear relations. The means basic density of plantations was 581 kg/m³ (cerrado) and 562 kg/m³ (terra firme). There was a significant effect on the axial position only in the terra-firme planting. Only in this environment there was no significant difference in volatile materials and higher heating value. In the cerrado, the energy productivity was superior to the terra-firme in all the classes, due to the difference of age and absence of competition. In both plantations the energy productivity was higher in the diameter of 22 to 25cm (class 4), indicating that this is the ideal diametric class for harvesting the wood when the objective is the management for bioenergy. Keywords: energy forests, biomass, Tachigali vulgaris, wood.
Transmission line outages caused by fires are frequent and affect the electric power supply to the population. Studying the factors that may aid in the understanding of this problem is fundamental to improve performance and guide future projects involving this type of installation. This study analyzed the forest inventories of vegetation adjacent to three Brazilian transmission line trunks and calculated their specific fire loads. The results were compared with the performance of these installations and revealed a high correlation (R2=0.9877) between the fire load and the number of transmission line outages, demonstrating the influence of vegetation on the operation of these installations.
