A major reason for excessive casual absenteeism, say the authors, could be eliminated by removing contractually structured and/or administered incentives to stay away from the job.Excessive employee absenteeism has been a long-standing problem for businessmen. The current economic environment, which is characterized by lagging sales, high energy costs, stiff foreign competition, declining worker productivity, and widespread layoffs, has again focused the attention of managers and labor union officials on the need for increased efficiency through elimination of excessive absenteeism. Although the enormous costs of casual absenteeism have increasingly been recognized, there's considerable disagreement about which factors are responsible for the high incidence of absenteeism among the nation's workers. Explanations range from employee laziness to worker disenchantment.
