IntroducciónEste trabajo constituye un esfuerzo exploratorio que pretende incursionar en las mediaciones existentes en la relación población-recursos naturales (P-R) en áreas de interés ambiental de la periferia de las ciudades. Se ha priorizado la visión subjetiva de los pobladores acerca de esa relación y los factores de cambio en la misma. La hipótesis que guía la investigación es que los descendientes de los ejidatarios y comuneros, cuyos ejidos y comunidades se ubican hoy en la periferia de la Ciudad de México, tienen una relación con los recursos naturales que está mediada por un proceso incompleto de integración entre las sociedades tradicionales y las modernas (léase rurales y urbanas) y la coexistencia de múltiples identidades.La estrategia seguida consistió en seleccionar un antiguo poblado rural ubicado en un área de interés ambiental para la Ciudad de Mé-xico. 1 Se encontró que la zona media del Ajusco cumple con la importante función ambiental de ser fuente de abasto de agua para los mantos acuíferos, de estar cubierta en su mayor parte con vegetación natural de pinus, querqus y oyameles que constituyen un pulmón para la ciudad; de ser reservorio de especies representativas de flora y * Profesora-investigadora del Centro de Estudios Demográficos y de Desarrollo Urbano de El Colegio de México. Este artículo tiene un doble objetivo: Por un lado, evidenciar que el quehacer de la investigación es un proceso continuo de aprendizaje, particularmente cuando nos enfrentamos a áreas del conocimiento para las cuales no existe una tradición disciplinaria específica como es el caso de los estudios ambientales desde las ciencias sociales. Por otro lado, destacar, mediante un ejemplo práctico, que dicho proceso no es una práctica lineal sino un camino de ida y vuelta en el cual se construyen, se desechan y se reinterpretan los elementos teórico-metodológicos hasta conformar un cuerpo coherente de interpretación.Es por lo anterior que esta exposición no se ha organizado de acuerdo con un orden convencional sino que se ha estructurado más bien en función del proceso seguido para presentar las ideas, plantear las preguntas, definir y redefinir los caminos a seguir y, mostrar las dificultades enfrentadas desde la primera concepción de la idea hasta la aplicación e interpretación del trabajo empírico, pasando por el desarrollo de la estrategia teórico-metodológica. La investigación que nos sirve de pretexto es un estudio exploratorio sobre la relación que los descendientes de los comuneros de San Nicolás Totolapan, hoy reconocidos principalmente como los ejidatarios del mismo nombre, han establecido con los recursos naturales en su ejido, ubicado en la periferia sur de la Ciudad de México.
Los resultados de investigación que aquí se presentan destacan el papel que desempeñan la cuestión jurídica y la movilización social en los procesos de expansión urbana y su relación con el ambiente. Para esto se seleccionaron dos casos de estudio: el Área Natural Protegida Parque Ecológico de la Ciudad de México y el Ejido de San Nicolás Totolapan, que se encuentran ubicados en suelo de conservación e incluyen usos de suelo rural y asentamientos irregulares. El trabajo muestra los cambios ocurridos en la legislación y las complejidades y limitaciones de su aplicación; por otra parte pone de manifiesto el papel contradictorio de las movilizaciones de los colonos urbanos y de los pobladores reales así como de sus enfrentamientos con respecto a la protección del ambiente.
