PROBLEMThis study investigated changes in clients' behaviors during the course of play therapy as a function of differing levels of therapist-offered conditions.
METHODSixteen children in the second through fourth grades who had been diagnosed as having learning disabilities were seen for 16 play-therapy sessions each by the same therapist in their individual schools in a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts.Faur-minute audiotape exeerpts from therapy sessions #3, 8, 12, and 16 were rated by three raters on the Borke Process Scale of Play Therapy") and on the Accurate Empathy, Unconditional Positive Regard, and Genuineness Scales (*).The four children who received the highest levels of therapist-communicated conditions were compared to the four children who received the lowest levels of therapist-communicated conditions on the Borke Process Scale of Play Therapy a t four different points of time in therapy. One-way analyses of variance were performed between the two groups on each item on the Borke Process Scale of Play Therapy a t each of the four time segments.
