There is a considerable interest in the use of aims and objectives with mentally and multiply handicapped people. This article describes how a multidisciplinary team sets and implements aims and objectives for mentally handicapped children who live in a hospital. It also includes examples of recording a team meeting, an individual activity and a small group activity.
The authors are both occupational therapists in community mental handicap teams. This article attempts to look at some of the major issues concerning their teams, such as role overlap and blurring, team leadership and the physical base of the team. It also looks at the role of the occupational therapist, both as a team member and as a professional, and provides some examples of work with individuals and groups.
