Information technology, especially the Internet, presents a great potential for the reconfiguring of industries, particularly in information-intensive sectors. In addition to this fact, the huge amount of resources spent annually to offer services and products within the virtual environment has been attracting the attention of executives as well as academicians. The banking sector is a clear example of this. This study evaluates the management characteristics of banks and their relationship with the utilization of Internet technology. The research entailed the participation of the information technology directors of 35 banks operating in Brazil, and the means of response was totally via the Internet.Six constructs were utilized: planning and control, human resource management, future-directioning, planning for Internet utilization, the sophistication of such utilization, and its results. The research revealed that the Internet is being utilized by the larger part of the participating banks only as a new channel for the traditional services offered. Three different management profiles were also identified among the banks: the innovator, the conservative and the passive; the characteristics of each are described.Associations were found among the pertinent bank management constructs: planning and control, HR management, future-directioning, and also among the Internet technology management constructs: planning and sophistication and results of use, which indicate that the planning and utilization of the more sophisticated functions of the Internet are associated with results of a greater impact for the banks.
