The purpose of this research was to investigate if physical properties could be improved by incorporating a tulle reinforcement material into a maxillofacial silicone elastomer. A-2186 silicone elastomer was used in this study. The study group consisted of 20 elastomer specimens incorporated with tulle and fabricated in dumbbell-shaped silicone patterns using ASTM D412 and D624 standards. The control group consisted of 20 elastomer specimens fabricated without tulle. Tensile strength, ultimate elongation, and tear strength of all specimens were measured and analyzed. Statistical analyses were performed using Mann-Whitney U test with a statistical significance at 95% confidence level. It was found that the tensile and tear strengths of tulle-incorporated maxillofacial silicone elastomer were higher than those without tulle incorporation (p<0.05). Therefore, findings of this study suggested that tulle successfully reinforced a maxillofacial silicone elastomer by providing it with better mechanical properties and augmented strength -especially for the delicate edges of maxillofacial prostheses.
Auricular prosthesis are fabricated generally in congenital deformities or tissue deficiencies gained by a trauma. Due to the difficulty of prosthetic localization, implant supported auricular prosthesis have important mechanical advantages when compared to those used with tissue adhesives. However, during the prosthetic preparation period of post implantation stage, problems like thickening of the skin tissue around the healing caps may be seen. This condition often requires a third surgical procedure for remodification of the healing tissues. This case report presents the application of modified healing cap which was attached to the prosthetic part of the patient which could not be rehabiliated due to the thickening of the tissue.
Fabricating a restoration which can serve clinically long term without any sign of complication and fulfill the functional and esthetic requirement is very hard to achieve in excessivelly damaged tooth especially when it is in the esthetic zone. The following case report presents an alternate method for the treatment of excessively damaged tooth which can diminish the ability of complication in the traditional treatment modality and as well as can fulfill the esthetic and functional demands of the patient.
