Organic polymers have been found
widespread commercial applications
due to their easy processing and attractive mechanical properties.
Concurrently, inorganic polyoxometalates (POMs), a class of metal–oxygen
anionic and nanosized clusters of early transition metals, have a
wide range of attractive functions and are used in industrial catalysis.
In this communication, we report a new approach to creating the first
linear poly(polyoxometalate)s that combine the advantages of polymers
and POM clusters. In the experiment, a POM-containing norbornene monomer
was first synthesized by linking a Wells-Dawson-type POM with a norbornene
derivative. The monomer was polymerized in the presence of a Grubbs
catalyst under mild conditions with yields nearly 100% in a living
and controllable manner. The resulting poly(polyoxometalate)s have
controllable molecular weights and a well-defined hybrid structure
of an organic polynorbornene backbone with large pendant groups of
the nanosized POM clusters. Thus, they form good films and have a
good catalytic performance. Our findings not only pave the way for
incorporating the POM clusters into polymers with well-defined structures
and high molecular weights, but also offer a competitive strategy
for developing more novel catalytic systems by introducing the poly(polyoxometalate)s.
Activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is associated with hypertension and heart disease. However, how RAS activation causes cardiac lesions remains elusive. Here we report the involvement of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in this process. In rats with chronic infusion of angiotensin II (Ang II), eight Wnt ligands were induced and β-catenin activated in both cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts. Blockade of Wnt/β-catenin signaling by small molecule inhibitor ICG-001 restrained Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy by normalizing heart size and inhibiting hypertrophic marker genes. ICG-001 also attenuated myocardial fibrosis and inhibited α-smooth muscle actin, fibronectin and collagen I expression. These changes were accompanied by a reduced expression of atrial natriuretic peptide and B-type natriuretic peptide. Interestingly, ICG-001 also lowered blood pressure induced by Ang II. In vitro, Ang II induced multiple Wnt ligands and activated β-catenin in rat primary cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts. ICG-001 inhibited myocyte hypertrophy and Snail1, c-Myc and atrial natriuretic peptide expression, and abolished the fibrogenic effect of Ang II in cardiac fibroblasts. Finally, recombinant Wnt3a was sufficient to induce cardiomyocyte injury and fibroblast activation in vitro. Taken together, these results illustrate an essential role for Wnt/β-catenin in mediating hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis. Therefore, blockade of this pathway may be a novel strategy for ameliorating hypertensive heart disease.
The objective of this study was to assess students’ knowledge, attitudes and practices on HIV and AIDS. A questionnaire was administered to a cross section of 259 Chinese undergraduates. Respondents were asked to provide information about knowledge and attitudes about HIV/AIDS. Study results indicated that the majority of undergraduates had a moderate level of HIV and AIDS knowledge, acceptance and attitudes towards people with HIV and AIDS. Boys had more acceptance and positive attitudes towards people with HIV and AIDS than girls. Students majoring in medicine performed better (more knowledgeable and accepting) than non-medical students. Differences between students with various monthly expenditures were found-- 6.2% of students had 3–5 sexual partners which has rarely been found in Chinese students; most students did not know HIV VCT centers and most students did not show their confidence for controlling of HIV and AIDS in China. In conclusion, students’ knowledge about HIV/AIDS was uneven. A peer educational program to talk about self esteem, healthy sexual attitudes, being human-accepting and loving should be developed in the near future.
