To fabricate a novel surface-acoustic-wave sensor, the core of an electronic nose (E-nose), 128° YX LiNbO3 with a large value of K2 was chosen as a sensing substrate. An interdigital transducer (IDT) was made with a Cr/Au film as a metallic structure on top of the substrate. The center frequency of the sensing chip was designed to be 100 MHz. A self-assembled bilayer, p-tert-butylcalix[6]arene, was synthesized on the Au surface between the centers of the IDT. Amine vapor was adopted as a sample to test the developed system. The detection limit for 1-aminopropane was about 60 ppm, the sensitivity was 0.96 Hz (ppmv)−1, the ratio of signal to noise at the detection limit was about 32 and the stability was about 0.05 ppm. A satisfactory linear response was proved in sensing gases of amine type.
