This article analyzes the translational shifting in In Einem Andern Land , Annemarie Horschitz's 1930 German translation of Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms . Horschitz, ostensibly influenced by a desire to have her translation conform to German literary traditions and the expectations of her German readers, embellishes Hemingway's understated prose, especially language associated with the war. The result in the translation is an altered portrayal of Frederic Henry and a weakening of the novel's critique of hyperbolic rhetoric.
