In this article, we review some of the criticisms levelled at current management education provided by business schools and the recommendations made by critical management studies scholars. These authors generally recommend placing greater emphasis on phronesis, that is, the manager’s practical wisdom. We investigated this path and formulated a practical solution, rooted in the operational framework provided by French didactic theory. It takes the form of a specific pedagogical device, the aim of which is to foster closer connections between experience acquired in professional settings and theoretical knowledge derived from management sciences. We describe our theoretical framework and explain its potential contributions to management education, and then we present the implementing steps of our device. We illustrate these steps through the main elements of a process carried out by a group of students in a European business school. We present some of the observations we made over a 3-year period experimenting with this device. We conclude by outlining the axes that we consider essential in designing this type of device.
Among the critical approaches to management and organizations, one has been little explored: it is the Lacanian approach. Furthermore, this perspective has not yet been used to help develop new pedagogical approaches in the field of management education. This is what, for the last 10 years, we have undertaken to do. In this article, we first show that Lacan’s work is particularly relevant in addressing the question of subjectivity and of the construction of one’s identity in the context of work. We then present the management education programme we have implemented in order to enable the participants to question their imaginary beliefs at work and to modify their place in the organizational narratives so as to recover new scope for action. A case study helps us illustrate the processes and the effects of the method we have used. Finally, we discuss the limitations and benefits of this approach, and the precautions that should be taken by those who might wish to use it in one way or another.
International audienceThis paper examines the tactics utilised by service workers to cope with the emotional dissonance that results from their compliance with the role scripts developed to meet customers' relational expectations. These tactics are examined in the framework of de Certeau's theory (1984) on the basis of field surveys conducted with cashiers working in two French hypermarkets. The concept of tactic helps us to better understand how the cashiers cope with these dissonances. It helps us to shed some light on some types of behaviour which, a priori, seem irrational, and to understand the unintentional effects of managerial policies
