Coffinite, USiO 4 , is an important U(IV) mineral, but its thermodynamic properties are not well-constrained. In this work, two different coffinite samples were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and purified from a mixture of products. The enthalpy of formation was obtained by high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Coffinite is energetically metastable with respect to a mixture of UO 2 (uraninite) and SiO 2 (quartz) by 25.6 ± 3.9 kJ/mol. Its standard enthalpy of formation from the elements at 25°C is −1,970.0 ± 4.2 kJ/mol. Decomposition of the two samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction and by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry coupled with mass spectrometric analysis of evolved gases. Coffinite slowly decomposes to U 3 O 8 and SiO 2 starting around 450°C in air and thus has poor thermal stability in the ambient environment. The energetic metastability explains why coffinite cannot be synthesized directly from uraninite and quartz but can be made by low-temperature precipitation in aqueous and hydrothermal environments. These thermochemical constraints are in accord with observations of the occurrence of coffinite in nature and are relevant to spent nuclear fuel corrosion.uranium | coffinite | USiO 4 | U(IV) minerals | calorimetry I n many countries with nuclear energy programs, spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and/or vitrified high-level radioactive waste will be disposed in an underground geological repository. Demonstrating the long-term (10 6 -10 9 y) safety of such a repository system is a major challenge. The potential release of radionuclides into the environment strongly depends on the availability of water and the subsequent corrosion of the waste form as well as the formation of secondary phases, which control the radionuclide solubility. Coffinite (1), USiO 4 , is expected to be an important alteration product of SNF in contact with silica-enriched groundwater under reducing conditions (2-8). It is also found, accompanied by thorium orthosilicate and uranothorite, in igneous and metamorphic rocks and ore minerals from uranium and thorium sedimentary deposits (2,4,5,(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16). Under reducing conditions in the repository system, the uranium solubility (very low) in aqueous solutions is typically derived from the solubility product of UO 2 . Stable U(IV) minerals, which could form as secondary phases, would impart lower uranium solubility to such systems. Thermochemical properties have been either measured or estimated for synthetic monazite, LaPO 4 , and dissakisite, CaLaMgAl 2 (SiO 4 ) 3 OH, the Mg-equivalent of allanite. A dissakisite formation enthalpy of -6,976.5 ± 10.0 kJ mol -1 was derived from high-temperature drop-solution measurements in lead borate at 975 K. A third-law entropy value of 104.9 ± 1.6 J mol -1 K -1 was retrieved from low-temperature heat capacity (C p ) measured on synthetic LaPO 4 with an adiabatic calorimeter in the 30-300 K range. The C p values of lanthanum phases were measured in the 143-723 K range by differential scanning calorimetry. In this study, La(OH) 3 appeared as suitable for drop solution in lead borate and represents an attractive alternative to La 2 O 3 . Pseudo-sections were calculated with the THERIAK-DOMINO software using the thermochemical data retrieved here for a simplified metapelitic composition (La = P REE + Y) and considering monazite and Fe-free epidotes along the dissakisite-clinozoïsite join, as the only REE-bearing minerals. Calculation shows a stability window for dissakisite-clinozoïsite epidotes (T between 250 and 550°C and P between 1 and 16 kbar), included in a wide monazite field. The P-T extension of this stability window depends on the bulk-rock Ca-content. Assuming that synthetic LaPO 4 and dissakisite-(La) are good analogues of natural monazite and allanite, these results are consistent with the REE-mineralogy sequence observed in metapelites, where (1) monazite is found to be stable below 250°C, (2) around 250-450°C, depending on the pressure, allanite forms at the expense of monazite and (3) towards amphibolite conditions, monazite reappears at the expense of allanite.

The preparation of Th(1-x)U(x)SiO(4) uranothorite solid solutions was successfully undertaken under hydrothermal conditions (T = 250 °C). From XRD and EDS characterization, the formation of a complete solid solution between x = 0 (thorite) and x = 0.8 was evidenced. Nevertheless, additional (Th,U)O(2) dioxide and amorphous silica were systematically observed for the highest uranium mole loadings. The influence of kinetics parameters was then studied to avoid the formation of such side products. The variation of the synthesis duration allowed us to point out the initial formation of oxide phases then their evolution to a silicate phase through a dissolution/precipitation process close to that already described as coffinitization. Also, the uranium mole loading initially considered was found to significantly influence the kinetics of reaction, as this latter strongly slows down for x > 0.3. Under these conditions, the difficulties frequently reported in the literature for the synthesis of pure USiO(4) coffinite were assigned to a kinetic hindering associated with the coffinitization reaction.
