Among neurotransmitter systems the serotonergic system in particular is thought to be involved in the initiation and maintenance of self-injurious behaviour, and pharmacological treatment with serotonin enhancers or serotonin reuptake inhibitors has been shown to reduce impulsive aggressive behaviour.
