For decades German historiography was rather reluctant to develop its own concept of modernity. It started to do so only once people began to feel ›post-modern‹, i.e., once people felt that modernity had come to an end. This article presents six versions of an historical theory of modernity, the last theory being the only one sufficiently complete and complex to meet the task.
