Nach "nicht selten kontroversen Diskussionen" und viel Zeit wurden "entsprechende Beiträge" gemeinsam veröffentlicht, das heißt es wurden "die germanistischen Beiträge vorgelegt […], die sich ausführlich der philologischen Grundlagenarbeit widmen" (S. VII). Ein "Niederschlag" mittelalterlicher "Varianzkultur" sei der Band, "er bietet kein einheitliches Gesamtbild, sondern illustriert die unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und Herangehensweisen" (ebd.). Sich konzeptioneller Schwächen des Bandes offenbar wohl bewusst seiend -anders sind diese Eingeständnisse kaum zu verstehenwäre es dann aber doch Aufgabe der Herausgeber gewesen, die Einzelstudien nicht schlicht als "offen ausgetragene Differenzen" (ebd.) unkommentiert nebeneinander zu stellen, die Zusammenhanglosigkeit des Bandes auf diese Weise nicht noch zu unterstreichen -eine offengelegte systematische Ordnung sucht man nämlich ebenfalls vergebens -, sondern wenigstens den Versuch zu unternehmen, einen gemeinsamen Nenner herauszupräparieren, um den herum die einzelnen Beiträge mit eigenem Erkenntnisinteresse, methodischem Zugang und Analyseinstrumentarium selbständige Thesen erarbeitet hätten.Zunächst ist gemeinsam allen Beiträgen, unabhängig aller methodologischer Differenzen, immerhin das Korpus.
