Despite improvements in childcare provision since the implementation of the National Childcare Strategy in England in 1998, little is known about the practicalities of managing childcare and employment from a parental perspective. It is not recognised that dependent children have to be physically transported from home to the place of care/education, and if transported by the parent the latter usually also has to travel to their workplace in a different location. This article discusses the complexity involved in coordinating these events, the barriers posed to maternal employment, and the strategies used by working parents to overcome the difficulties. It presents an analysis of qualitative data from in-depth interviews with 40 mothers in a middle-sized city in England. The analysis exposes the additional work involved in temporally, spatially and physically coordinating childcare, education and work. It indicates that early education related to children's ages might have a greater influence on coordination difficulties, and therefore maternal employment, than the numbers of children in a family per se. The article argues that policy makers need to have a greater regard for the time and space dimensions attached to coordination, the coordination support provided by fathers and others (as opposed to childcare), transport issues and the need for fully integrated early years provision in all neighbourhoods.
All the known Badger setts in Essex were resurveyed in the mid‐1980s to record any changes in Badger distribution and status, and any associated changes in habitat and land use, during the preceding 20 years. New setts were also located. Being on the edge of London, Essex has undergone many recent changes that might be disadvantageous to Badgers. It is subjected to a high demand for land to meet increasing housing needs, intensive arable farming is widespread and few undisturbed habitats remain. These are typical of the pressures facing the Badger population in many areas of north‐west Europe, and so Essex was an ideal area in which to look at the status of the Badger, and in particular the impact of human activities on a Badger population. Much of the county is unsuitable for sett construction, since it consists of London Clay and glacial tills, and the highest concentration of setts was found in the Bagshot Beds. Woodland is rare in Essex, but it was still the favoured site for sett construction. Although over half the county is devoted to arable farming, Badgers tended to avoid such areas, and also avoided close proximity to roads, particularly busy roads, for sett sites. Since much of the county is low‐lying, man‐made embankments were particularly important sett sites, and land‐reclamation activities have probably provided additional sites for Badger setts. The effects of human activities on Badger distribution and numbers in Essex are discussed.
The Labour government aims to increase the lone parent employment rate to per cent by . To achieve this aim, it has introduced a state subsidy for childcare in the form of the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit. So far this has been limited to formal childcare despite evidence that lone parents are more likely to use informal childcare. This article investigates the potential of a state subsidy to be extended to support informal childcare. Utilizing evidence from a study of qualitative in-depth interviews with lone parents, it explores preferences for informal care and the way that informal care is negotiated. On the one hand, we found that some lone parents held deeply embedded preferences for informal childcare based on trust, commitment, shared understandings and children's happiness. Thus it can be concluded that it is important for the government to support informal as well as formal care. On the other, we found that the way lone parents actually negotiated informal childcare involved complex notions of obligation, duty and reciprocity, suggesting that a subsidy could potentially intrude upon complex private family relationships. However, the evidence suggests that care was negotiated differently depending on whether it was provided by a grandparent or other family and friends, with lone parents tending to favour paying for childcare provided by other family and friends than grandparents. This has implications for a state subsidy, which needs further investigation.
