RésuméL’article se fonde sur l’observation selon laquelle les relations de pouvoir et les règles sociales étaient matérialisées par des actions publiques, où devoirs, droits et services des membres de l’élite et de l’administration étaient rendus visibles de manière symbolique. Ce point de vue autorise une nouvelle approche de ce que l’on appelle les « services d’honneur », ceux de cellerier, maréchal, sénéchal, maître d’hôtel, aussi bien que porteur du bouclier ou de l’épée du souverain. En prenant des cas précis, tels qu’il s’en observe dans les chroniques et dans la littérature, il apparaît que le message symbolique de telles actions correspondait à une sujétion autant qu’à une charge honorifique. Des services symboliques ostentatoires étaient jugés nécessaires précisément dans les cas où la volonté de servir pouvait être mise en doute. Les services d’honneur permettaient l’affichage de la sujétion sans pour autant faire perdre la face à celui qui y était soumis.
Magie und magisches Denken besitzen für mittelalterliche Gesellschaften einen herausragenden Stellenwert, wie die historische Forschung eindrücklich herausgearbeitet hat. Der vorliegende Band nähert sich dem Faszinationsbereich aus einer dezidiert literaturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive und nimmt das Phänomen in Fallstudien vom Mittelalter bis zur Renaissance in den Blick.
