CARIRI BENIGNA, M. J. Crescimento e estado nutricional de crianças de 0-11 anos, Estado da Paraíba (nordeste brasileiro). Rev. Saúde públ., S. Paulo, 21:480-9, 1987. RESUMO:Compara-se o crescimento do peso-idade e da altura-idade de 7.990 crianças de 0-11 anos, aleatoriamente selecionadas e medidas em 1981-1982 no Estado da Paraíba (nordeste do Brasil), com o de estudo global realizado no nordeste em [1974][1975], com as curvas de crescimento das referências nacional e internacional. Os resultados colocam em evidência um déficit de crescimento muito acentuado, sobretudo com relação à referência internacional. A 11 anos nítidas diferenças se manifestam: 8 ou 9 quilos para o peso, segundo o sexo, e em torno de 11 cm para a altura. Os déficits de crescimento observados poderiam ser atribuídos à grande seca de 1978-1983, em particular o déficit de crescimento do peso em função da idade. No entanto, o déficit de crescimento da altura em função da idade mostra a existência de alterações mais profundas e mais insidiosas, ao longo do crescimento, manifestando-se por má nutrição crônica, atribuída sobretudo a fatores de ordem estrutural socioeconômica. Constata-se, portanto, no decorrer da última década, que eles têm sido cada vez mais deteriorados, como testemunham as alterações do modelo de crescimento -ele mesmo exprimindo o agravamento da situação nutricional da região.

RESUMO: Foram comparados os diferentes métodos de análise dos dados antropométricos usualmente utilizados como indicadores nutricionais, a fim de testar a sua sensibilidade e validade para a elaboração de planos de vigilância e/ou intervenção. A população estudada, numa comunidade do sertão paraibano (Brasil), constituiu em uma amostra de 110 crianças de ambos os sexos, na faixa etária de 3 a 71 meses. Várias combinações de peso e altura entre si e com relação à idade foram executadas utilizando diversos padrões de referência e métodos de avaliação comparativa. Verificou-se que a utilização de desvios-padrões é preferível às percentagens na caracterização epidemiológica e quantificação do estado nutricional de populações em situação de carência; no caso do emprego exclusivo de percentagens, o levantamento se limita à simples enumeração, as vezes exagerada, dos casos possíveis de desnutrição. Demonstrou-se também que o peso e a altura são realmente os indicadores mínimos, mas que para se obter dados epidemiológicos bem mais completos e proveitosos, é útil acrescentar a tomada do perímetro do braço e da prega cutânea tricipital. INTRODUÇÃOAs vantagens do uso de métodos antropométricos no diagnóstico epidemiológico da situação nutricional são bem conhecidas: boa aceitação por parte da população, custo pouco elevado em material e técnicas simples com, no entanto, a desvantagem relativa de que a fidedignidade dos dados depende estritamente do rigor aplicado às medidas, que permitirá compará-las com outras e assegurará a sua repetição nas mesmas condições.Serão debatidos aqui diversos tratamentos dos dados antropométricos, os mais correntemente utilizados como indicadores nutricionais, com a finalidade de estabelecer qual ou quais deles refletem melhor os diversos aspectos da desnutrição energético-protéica e, por conseguinte, quais serão de uso mais adequado no estabelecimento de um programa de vigilância nutricional e na elaboração de planos de intervenção.
